Solar Projects
Current solar project | Johannesburg warehouse
965 kW solar system installed in 2019 at our Johannesburg warehouse and linked to the Super Parks grid.
Another 1,6 MW added, and 2,5 MW of batteries installed in 2023, enabling the park to use solar during loadshedding, reducing diesel usage of generators, and reducing grid usage during peak periods.
Delivering a saving of 4,08 MW between 2019 and 2023 for Super Park.
Future solar project | Durban warehouse
New SG Convenience Durban warehouse under construction in 2023.
294 solar panels to be installed on the roof of the warehouse.
Generating 596 kWh per month the panels will ensure an annual saving of 783 752 kWh and a CO2 avoidance of 760,239 kg.
An inverter with a 600-kW system capacity to be installed, along with 17 lithium iron phosphate batteries capable of storing up to 157 kWh per battery.

LIGHTING
LED LIGHTING
- LED lighting installed in our Johannesburg warehouse.
- Systematic conversion to LED globes in our Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth warehouses has led to lower electricity consumption.
- Conversion to LED lights in our George warehouse.
- LED lighting throughout the facility of our new SG Convenience Durban warehouse.
- Automatic motion sensors fitted to all new high bay lights, turning them on only when required, and off again after a set time.
- 48.54% saving in electrical consumption when 105 x 200 W Linear LED high-bay lights replaced 168 x 250 W T8 fluorescent high-bay lights at our Johannesburg warehouse.
DAY/NIGHT SENSORS
- Automatic Day/Night switches installed across all depots.
MOTION SENSORS
- Motion-activated sensors have been installed in all the offices, walkways, pause areas, and evacuation stairwells.
- Lights and air conditioner units are automatically switched off when no movement has occurred within 10 minutes, and on again when movement is detected.

WATER PURIFICATION
Water purification | Johannesburg warehouse
Water purification systems have been installed at the Johannesburg warehouse.
- Four water storage tanks each with a capacity of 40,000 litres.
- Rainwater is harvested from the wash bay and gutters then stored in 40,000 litre tanks.
- Wash bay water is recycled from three water traps after being filtered through various sumps to remove the oil and debris.
- Recycled water is reused in the wash bay area.
- Recycled water is pumped to the toilets in the offices and warehouse when a water supply issue or low pressure is experienced.

WASTE
Currently recycling up to
77%
of the waste from our operations.
Reduced to only 23% of waste that needs to be compacted, baled, and disposed of, resulting in a significant water, paper, and energy savings, and a reduction of CO2.

PEAK TIME SWITCH OFF
Timers and MHE charging
Merchandised Handling Equipment (MHE) chargers are all linked to timers installed in the electrical distribution boards.
MHE chargers are automatically switched off during peak time hours (6-9 am and 5-8 pm)
Defrost cycles for freezers are set for peak time hours to lighten our load on the grid.
